English Only Proposals

Here is a bit of information you just might need to keep Legal! More than 30 municipalities like Carpentersville, Illinois have passed or are considering English-Only proposals to block illegal immigrants from access to housing, jobs and education. The measure typically requires landlords and employers to verify the legal status of every applicant for an apartment or a job, or face stiff fines. "Landlords and employers are the ones that are profiting as a result of illegal immigration,” said Ira Mehlman, a Federation for American Immigration reform. "Then those landlords and employers are committing everybody else in those communities to pay for education and health care and they are subjecting neighbors to houses that are filled with 20 and 30 people." Although Hispanic leaders are protesting against the measures, property investors need to be up on the new rules and watch for ordinances passing in their towns. To protect yourself, hire a tenant screening organization and when you do, make sure the credit report offers a SafeScan. SafeScan is a search that verifies the validity of the social security number with the Social Security Administration. Remember that illegal immigrants have made-up social security numbers and many of them have good credit. Unless the social is verified, you can’t tell if the person you are interviewing is illegal. We will continue to watch the English-only movement and will report to you if any changes occur. For the latest news, watch for SSREI’s news briefs from investors helping investors.

Thanks Tina for this info!!
